Paws on the Wind
Written on May 31, 2026 based on a text message about my experience in the desert that morning.
I carried AriBean where the desert opens wide
Past the stones and silver brush, past the place coyotes hide
To the farthest edge of morning, where the sand remembers well
All the stories that our footsteps never had to tell
I saw Lily in the sunlight, Rainey flying at her side
Ari playing rabbit with the whole world open wide
And I swear I heard their paws again, a thunder soft and thin
Like a memory with a heartbeat coming back upon the wind
Run on, run on, across the golden sand
No leash, no pain, no leaving from my hand
What was dust goes drifting, what was love remains
Run on, AriBean, through the wind and through the flame
I opened up the scatterbox and walked the long way home
Let the breeze take what was borrowed, let the desert take its own
And I cried because I loved you, and I smiled because I knew
Every grain that left my fingers was not the truth of you
Run on, run on, across the golden sand
No leash, no pain, no leaving from my hand
What was dust goes drifting, what was love remains
Run on, AriBean, through the wind and through the flame
Skye still walks beside me
Sage keeps watch nearby
And the morning holds the paw beats
Of old clouds crossing sky
Lily, Rainey, Ari
Just beyond what eyes can see
They whisper “I am not a body
I am free”
Run on, run on, where the desert meets the blue
No end, no grave, no last goodbye to you
What was dust goes drifting, what was love remains
Run on, AriBean, through the wind and through the flame
Paws on the wind
Love running free
I am still as God created me
I am still as God created me
Run on, my Ari
Run on, free
Paws on the wind
Love running free
